Harry was the school photographer for many years at our school. He was always so cheerful and positive and had a great energy about him. I was surprised and sad to learn that he passed away, and send my condolences to his family. His presence will definitely be missed in our community, and he will be remembered by many.

To Helen and the Dong Family,
Some people are like lights in the forest. Harry was just such a light: with an infectious smile, kind eyes, and a positive manner. Not only was he generous in the way he treated others, he held the highest standards for himself and early in his life he achieved the highest honor in Scouting, the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a charismatic leader who led from the heart in his photographic work and in life. He will be sorely missed.
With best wishes,
Glen Kimoto

I’m so saddened by this news. Harry and I were in many of the same classes through middle school and high school; he made working through algebra problems together fun. I will always remember his warm smile and sense of humour. He was all-around the nicest guy. Sending his family my deepest sympathy.

My life-long friend Harry. We grew up one house apart on California Street. We spent weekends, after school and entire summers riding bikes, skateboarding, throwing balls of every kind, shooting bb guns and bass fishing in Neary Lagoon as well as Antonelli Pond. If you have a memory of breaking your first window with a baseball, well, Harry was there. We thought my Dad was gonna kill us but of course, he didn’t. Those were the days when you were grounded, punished and held accountable. Our parents shared that style.
Harry had amazing balance and quick reflexes. In the day, he rode a very narrow and short skateboard he made himself. When he graduated from roller derby style wheels to Road Riders it was off to Haut on Swift for me to catch up. I remember pulling him with my bike on his skateboard and we would go around the block for at least an hour while he jumped the steeper driveways and even could roll over the dirt/grass corner at Arcadia Street. Harry could skate on two wheels while popping a skateboard wheelie, front or back trucks while cruising at speed.
We would play king of the mountain, kill the carrier and slaughter ball tag before school and during recess while attending Bay View Elementary School. Harry was a sought after talented slaughter ball player during lunchtime intramural competition at Santa Cruz High. I had a few welts from that but managed to get some revenge playing racquetball at UCSC or out at Cabrillo Courthouse.
We rode bikes everywhere. One day I was on my single speed bike when I was turning the blind corner at speed into his driveway. Unbeknown to me Harry was on his BMX one-speed approaching the corner of his driveway. Both of us were at speed when we collided head-on, resulting in a crash that lead to a fit of laughing followed by a trip to the garage to straighten the handlebars, etc. We both had lumps on our faces from where our heads had collided.
We would ride our bikes down to Neary Lagoon and seemed like we always caught largemouth bass every trip. We had level wind reels and used spinnerbaits (top cranks) and plastic Tom Mann’s Blueberry worms (bottom, slow). We did catch and release from the grungy swamp water and probably caught the same fish over and over again.
At what is now Nearly Lagoon Park but then was a city dump site adjacent the sewer plant, we cut crotches out of willow trees with buck knives and fashioned them into sling shots with surgical tubing and leather. We shot marbles, steel ball bearings (steelies), rocks and dirt clods. Harry’s great hand/eye coordination allowed him to be a very accurate shot. A couple of Fish and Game Laws may have been violated.
We would ride our bikes over to Delaware Ave which was still undeveloped. There were many impromptu pump tracks, plywood jumps and trails. We graduated to ten speeds and frequently rode up to UCSC, also fairly undeveloped. We would ride the ten speeds on the fire roads and trails all along Empire Grade and race home downhill at top speed. As adults we later traveled similar routes on mountain style bikes, tumbling over the handlebars on steep sections. Amazingly we didn’t get too hurt. Our stomachs were sore from uncontrollable fits of laughing.
Harry and I grew up helping his grandpa and my father fix everything. We grew up in an era where you did all your own plumbing, electrical, carpentry, automotive, etc. Harry was never afraid to jump right into a project and soon became adept as an accomplished handyman. He was an expert bicycle mechanic who fabricated and tuned his own wheels. I was a cub scout in the same pack where I saw Harry continue to get his Eagle Scout. We raced homemade balsa wood rockets, worked on soap box cars and I recall admiring a rope bridge he had a major part in constructing for the Scout-a-Rama.
Harry, his sister Lilly and later down the road his brother, Ronnie were exceptional tennis and ping pong players. Harry helped Santa Cruz High School Coach Mullen compete for the countywide titles. You could get hurt playing ping pong and we played for hours. Ronnie scared the neighbors with his grunting during the forehand.
Harry was an outstanding piano player. I remember the day the baby grand from my great grandmother was moved on a dolly from our house to Harry’s living room. Man he could play the piano. Credit to his mother Catherine’s strictness.
Interestingly enough, Harry never got into any arguments or disputes. Maybe with his sister Lilly a couple times but even those could be worked out between them. Harry was even keeled for sure.
Harry was a few years older than I was so he moved on to different phases of life sooner but we remained friends. He found an amazing wife, Helen. I remember him bounding down from the altar to snap a quick photo of his own wedding with a camera he had in his tuxedo pocket. The crowd cheered wildly in comedic surprise. Harry was a master professional photographer building on the tutelage of his father, Larry, influence of George Lee and many other outstanding artists, Lilly included. Harry cooked a pulled-pork that would make Bobby Flay proud. Perfection oriented, just like every other aspect of his life.
I could write more but in truth, my eyes are swollen with tears
.
I will miss Harry’s easygoing personality and the closeness we shared. God Bless his family. I am forever indebted. My heart is heavy. Thank you for letting me post just a few memories.

I was saddened to read about Harry's passing. He provided his photography services to San Lorenzo Valley High School for as long as I could remember. My daughter, both SLVHS graduates, also remember Harry throughout their years at SLVHS. Harry was an important part of the beginning-of-the-school year rituals. We could always count on Harry and his helpers to be there to take photos of students and staff each year. I knew that Harry retired in 2016, my last year at SLVHS. We missed his smile, friendliness, easy-going presence, and professionalism. I hope he was able to enjoy some retirement time with his family.

I am so saddened to hear of Harry's passing. We spent many years together in the little league stands watching the boys play baseball. Those were good years and Harry always had a smile on his face. My heart goes out to Helen and the kids. Stay strong and carry on that smile in Harry's honor.
Tragic that the community is not able to come together to honor his life as I know it would be a packed house from all the lives that he touched throughout the years.
Sincerely, Heather Babcock

So very sorry for your loss. I was one of many who got our senior and family photos with Harry. He was such a gracious host, making us feel at ease and yes, cracking jokes. The beautiful photo garden was an oasis right in Mission St. Thank you for sharing him with us all those years.

My sincere condolences to the Dong Family. I’m shocked and saddened to learn of Harry’s passing. He always had a quick smile and a happy demeanor each time we bumped into each other. We had the connection of carrying on local family businesses. He was too young to go. So sad. We’ve lost part of our greater Santa Cruz family,
